چکیده

Dinardi RR, Andrade CR, Ibiapina C. Effect of the Airmax Internal Nasal Dilator on Peak Nasal Inspiratory Flow, Aerobic Capacity, and Rating of Perceived Exertion in Healthy Rugby Players. JEPonline 2017;20(1):92-101. Nasal dilators have been widely used by athletes to improve performance. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of the Airmax internal nasal dilator (IND) on the aerobic capacity (VO2 max), peak nasal inspiratory flow (PNIF), and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) of rugby players. We used a double-blind, crossover study in which 15 adult athletes were assessed while using and not using the IND during a maximum cardio-respiratory test, with experimental treatment presented in randomized order. PNIF was obtained and RPE was assessed. In relation to PNIF, the subjects using the IND showed significantly higher means than those not using the IND (180.7 ± 55.1 L·min vs. 160.7 ± 54.7 L·min, respectively) (P<0.001). There was no significant difference in the VO2 max values or in RPE with or without the IND (P=0.106 and P=0.105, respectively). Thus, the findings indicate that the Airmax IND improves nasal patency, as measured by PNIF, in healthy rugby athletes, but does not increase VO2 max or RPE. New studies should be conducted to evaluate the effect of IND in adult athletes with nasal obstruction, perhaps also through the use of other cardiorespiratory assessment methods.

Managing nasal valve compromise patients with nasal dilators: objective vs. subjective parameters.

INTRODUCTION Patients suffering from nasal obstruction due to nasal valve compromise may benefit from a nasal dilator. Several devices for widening of the external/internal nasal valve region can be applied endonasally (Airmax, Nasanita, Nozovent) or externally (Breathe Right). MATERIALS AND METHODS 100 patients suffering from nasal obstruction due to external or internal nasal valve compromi...

Nasal resistance and flow resistive work of nasal breathing during exercise: effects of a nasal dilator strip.

Using posterior rhinomanometry, we measured nasal airflow resistance (Rn) and flow-resistive work of nasal breathing (WONB), with an external nasal dilator strip (ENDS) and without (control), in 15 healthy adults (6 men, 9 women) during exclusive nasal breathing and graded (50-230 W) exercise on a cycle ergometer. ENDS decreased resting inspiratory and/or expiratory Rn (at 0.4 l/s) by >0.5 cmH(...

Monitoring Training Load on Malaysian Rugby 15s Players

Background. In order to minimize overtraining, a reliable method is required to analyze training loads. Objectives. The objective of this study was to see if session Rate of Perceived Exertion (sRPE) is a valuable tool for tracking changes in perceived training load and strain among Malaysia rugby 15-a-side players during preparation for a significant game. Methods. Twenty-eight (n=28) elite ...

Nasal airflow dynamics: mechanisms and responses associated with an external nasal dilator strip.

The adhesive external nasal dilator strip (ENDS) is widely advocated for prevention of snoring and promotion of nasal breathing during exercise. In the present study, the effects of the ENDS on nasal airflow resistance (Rn) in normal subjects were examined and factors determining individual responses to the ENDS explored. Using posterior rhinomanometry, 20 healthy Caucasian adults (10 males, 10...
